The case of the missing sling
One dusty summer afternoon in Stephenville Texas, nineteen-year old Luke had been recruited along with some of his friends to work on a construction project to erect a communications tower for a local company. Upon arriving at the remote rural site for the project, the crew chief realized he had forgotten some of the equipment needed to unload the steel components from his eighteen-wheel truck. Improvising, he used a single sling to lift a 2.5 ton bundle of angle iron with the truck-mounted crane. During this process, the load became unbalanced and slipped from the sling, landing on Luke. Luke died from his injuries shortly thereafter. Luke's family had a difficult time getting answers to their questions about what had happened and asked The Girards Law Firm for help.
The Girards Law Firm got involved in this tragic incident and fought those responsible through a number of state and federal courts. Ultimately, justice was achieved against the tower erection company after a jury trial in Cleburne, Texas, where the operators of the company were finally forced to face Luke's family and explain themselves. The case resulted in a substantial verdict against the company.
Following verdict, a judgment was entered for $10.5 million against the tower erection company. The case was later settled for a confidential amount.
