The case of the misdirected crane
Twenty-five-year old Raul was working on a job site drilling test wells. Unfortunately, the drill operator was operating the truck-mounted drill in a narrow alleyway and was not paying enough attention to the power lines nearby. The drilling rig struck an overhead power line while Raul was touching part of the truck resulting in profound burns. Ultimately, Raul lost his arm and required skin grafting. After being forced to answer the difficult questions created by this disaster, the company reached a settlement sufficient to provide for Raul and his family for the rest of his life.
This case was settled for $4.5 million prior to trial.
