The case of the needless surgery
For a number of days, Joan had noticed she was a little more short-of-breath than normal. She went to her cardiologist to make sure everything was all right. Although the doctor was aware that Joan was taking powerful blood thinning medications, he scheduled her for a heart catheterization procedure the next day. Just prior to the catheterization, the doctor was provided with labwork showing that it was not safe to proceed with Joan's procedure. Unfortunately, Joan suffered serious bleeding complications as a result. She never left the hospital following the procedure as complication after complication set in. She died almost a year later. All this time, Joan's family was never told that she should never have had a heart catheterization that fateful day. Joan's husband and children contacted the Girards Law Firm for help. The Girards Law Firm investigation showed that the heart procedure should not have taken place due to the lab tests that had been obtained the day before the procedure. When exposed with this truth, the doctor and his medical group reached a settlement with Joan's family rather than face a jury with that they had done.
This case was settled for $1.5 million.
