The case of the college student

One winter evening, 20-year-old honor student Karl was found behind the steering wheel of his Jeep with difficulty breathing. His friends called an ambulance to take him to the hospital. A cardiologist placed a catheter in Karl's chest to help evaluate his condition. In doing so, the doctor punctured Karl's lung, causing it to collapse. The cardiologist didn't recognize the problem he caused, although the nurses caring for Karl did. Unfortunately, the nurses didn't call anyone to address the problem, and even gave Karl several large doses of drugs, without a physician's order. These drugs caused his blood pressure to plummet. Karl suffered massive brain damage as a result of these failures and died several days later. The explanation offered by the hospital did not make sense to the family so that contacted The Girards Law Firm for help. The firm examined the medical records and brought in experts to reconstruct the events. Witness statements proved the inexcusable series of events that resulted in Karl's death. The cardiologist and hospital were forced to accept responsibility for their errors and reached a settlement with Karl's family.

This case settled for $1.86 million.
