If you want a sobering read, open the current issue of the Journal of Healthcare Risk Management and turn to page 10. The journal reports that 4 to 8 million people are seriously harmed by malpractice every year - in addition to the 400,000 or so killed by malpractice every year. And, this is just inside hospitals. The journal delcares malpractice a "pandemic," stating that the extent of harm in teh USA every year is "staggering." According to the statistics cited in the Journal, if you walk down the halls of any hospital and select every 3rd or every 4th patient to be needlessly injured or killed, you would get an idea of how serious this problem is. It is time for more accountability in the medical profession and not less.
