The US government has accused UT Southwestern and other hospitals of human experimentation in violation of federal law when they conducted a study of over 1300 premature babies without adequate consent from the parents. The study, known as SUPPORT, studied varying levels of oxygenation to premature babies to see which levels gave better results in survival and eyesight. But, parents were told the oxygen levels to be used were within an acceptable range, when in fact some levels were shown by previous studies to cause brain injury or death. Some parents were told nothing at all. Others were told that the study did not increase the risk of brain injury or death. The US Department of Health and Human Services has objected in a recent letter to the study leaders. Stay tuned....
