Study: Smartwatches Can Accurately Identify Cardiac Dysfunction
In recent years heart monitoring apps for smartwatches have become very popular. At first a novelty, a lingering question has been whether they are of any real benefit. Now, in a first of its kind prospective study by the Mayo Clinic this question has been answered. On January 18, 2023, the study was published in medical journals Primary Care and Cardiology. Over one hundred thousand smartwatch ECGs were analyzed using AI technology and researchers found that the apps reliably identified cardiac dysfunction, which for study purposes was defined as an ejection fraction of 40% or lower.
