In a study of Commercial Driver Safety Risk Factors, the authors find previous crashes and violations are predictive of future crashes. In fact, a commercial driver who has had a past crash is 88% more likely to be involved in a future crash. Traffic violations were also highly predictive of future crashes including improper signaling, passing & turning, lane changes and speeding. Prior convictions were associated with a 65% increase in likelihood of future crash involvement. The study shows that employers and carriers must proactively address future crash risk with their hiring and management practices.
